The Coastal Grandmother aesthetic is a style built around relaxed, classic pieces. Think linen separates, crisp white button-downs, wide-brim sun hats, gingham, and rattan bags in a palette of creams, whites, sandy beiges, and soft navy. The overall goal is to blend into a Nancy Meyers film set. Cable-knit draped over your shoulders, Sauvignon Blanc within arm’s reach, hydrangeas in a vase.

Believe me, with a toddler, there are many days and moments where I don’t feel calm or anywhere near the neighborhood of calm. A lot of times I feel like a duck, look calm while paddling like crazy under the water.

After pretty much living in them during my pregnancy, I had to take a bit of a break but now they’re back in the rotation. Linen Shorts: These shorts have been my most worn item of the summer, hands down. I wish I had had a pair last summer when I was more newly postpartum, their stretchy waistband would have been a godsend. They come in several colorways, I reach for my white ones the most (closely followed by light blue). Make it a matching set with a linen button-down for an easy summer outfit.

I love a good shirt dress for weekends, especially during the dog days of summer. The shirt dress above comes in a variety of patterns so sky’s the limit for styling. I’ve been leaning more towards maxi-length dresses with the constant “up, down, up, down” demands from our toddler. Put this outfit on and hop into the car for a fun day trip! This outfit is pretty much made for a winery visit, a beach day, or even escaping the heat to go antiquing. The dress above is an older J.Crew dress and right now doesn’t fit me postpartum. But I love the look and this dress is a longtime summer favorite of mine. J.Crew Factory has a red gingham boatneck dress that made me think of this dress and I promptly ordered it. I wore it for the Fourth of July, it’s so comfortable!

Quite possibly THE most important outfit formula in this post. Best deployed when you and your family are going somewhere, your toddler is dressed and happily distracted with a toy, your partner is ready, and it’s finally your turn. Oh, and you have less than 10 minutes. Ready, set, go! A sweater tank or sweater shell plus white jeans (or linen shorts, depending on the day) plus some simple gold jewelry (or maybe let’s go wild and do a statement necklace to zhuzh it up) and you are ready to head out the door.
