Happy Thursday! When I was thinking about what cocktails to share with you in 2019, I decided I wanted to do a mix of fun + unique drinks that can liven up a party (tiki, anyone?) and classic signature cocktails to master and look impressive.
Kicking this off, we’re starting with probably the most classic signature cocktail of them all: The Old Fashioned.
It took me awhile to get into bourbon and I get the taste isn’t everyone’s cup of tea – so to speak. This might hurt for the purists who take their bourbon neat so scroll through… but I started mixing bourbon with ginger ale and slowly decreasing the amount of ginger ale as I acquired a taste for bourbon. I’m sorry but it worked.
When you order an Old Fashioned at a bar, it can be a little intimidating. I mean, more than once I’ve seen the bartender take out a lighter and use it to release the oils in an orange peel. Bartenders are professionals, they know what they’re doing, and yes, the extra orange oils are a fun touch. And the showmanship is always entertaining. But in my apartment, I’m not about to break out a lighter and put it anywhere near alcohol. That just sounds like a recipe for disaster. Let’s leave that to the professionals.
So we’re going to keep this Old Fashioned classic and simple, which is how I like things around here. Alright, let’s make an Old Fashioned!
