I’m going to level with you.
This week has been an emotional rollercoaster.
My mom and Tommy were in town for a week and we had a blast hanging out, eating homemade chicken fingers on DC’s snow day + cruising around Annapolis. Every morning before I left for work, I gave Tommy a hug and each time he’d ask when I’d be back. One morning, I had barely gotten 10 steps from Tommy when I heard him ask in a very concerned tone, “Mom! When is Lauren coming back?!”
Heart. Melted. Everywhere.
Then came the series finale of Parks + Recreation. But I’ll be honest, the waterworks started before our final visit to Pawnee. I unwisely decided to watch The Voice. I say unwisely not because I dislike the show. Au contraire, I get a genuine kick out of the Blake/Adam banter-filled bromance and as someone without an ounce of musical talent, I love listening to incredible singers. But each singer has a backstory that makes me feel emotionally attached and then I dissolve into tears when this person who I have known for all of 60 seconds makes it or breaks it. I’m a sucker for a great triumph story.
TL;DR The Voice kicked me square in the feels and then Parks + Recreation finished me off.
I had to YouTube “happy puppies” to recalibrate my emotions after the credits rolled. I should have turned my TV off then but noooo, I had to go and watch the cast on Late Night with Seth Meyers. No shame, their rendition of “Bye Bye Li’l Sebastian” gave me chills.
Clearly, I’m a masochist.
Which brings us to the blood orange jalapeño margarita.
I’ve waxed poetic about my love for jalapeños many times so let’s take a second and gush about blood oranges.
I kinda wonder if other citrus fruits are jealous of the blood oranges’ ombré hue. Like, does a clementine go up to a blood orange and ask who does their ombré? And then get green (orange?) with envy when the blood orange replies, “Oh, this is natural.”
These are the big, burning questions that keep me up at night.
But seriously, blood oranges are the Jared Letos of the citrus world.
And speaking of emotions, last night I went to tackle my dishes and when I was almost done, I felt a sharp piece of glass. Immediately, I carefully drained my sink and made a truly heartbreaking discovery. My fateful flamingo shot glass went on to that Great Big Bar in the Sky. *Sob*
So let’s pour one out for my flamingo shot glass, pictured below. We’ll always have tequila.
Start your blood orange jalapeño margarita by adding ice to a cocktail shaker. Toss in 2-4 jalapeño slices (seeds removed) and add 1 tequila shot and a drizzle of agave nectar. Squeeze 2 blood oranges and add the juice to the shaker. Finally, add a spritz of freshly squeezed lime juice and shake! Strain into a glass + cheers!
Ingredients
1 jalapeño, sliced + seeds removed
1 tequila shot
2 blood oranges
1 lime
Agave nectar
Directions
Toss 2-4 jalapeño slices into an ice-filled cocktail shaker.
Add 1 tequila shot and a drizzle of agave nectar.
Squeeze 2 blood oranges and add the juice to the shaker.
Finally, add a spritz of freshly squeezed lime juice and shake.

Lady, I just spend a ridiculous amount of time scouring your blog – I know we are connected on Twitter, but I had yet to head over and check this stuff out. Love. It. Scott is a huge cocktail connoisseur and has been experimenting as of late – will be showing him this post!
