Hi friends! This weekend was filled with football, family and friends just the way it should be. My dad came down from New York to go to the Bills-Ravens game on Sunday with his fire buddies but we did get some dad-daughter time in on Friday and Saturday when we headed for Annapolis to watch Navy take on UConn! It was a close game but Navy squeaked out a W against the Huskies and after we headed to my friend’s parents’ home to watch the Battle at Bristol. And of course, no trip to Annapolis can be complete without a visit to Pusser’s for a Painkiller…

But it’s Monday and I’m ready to get back to work, iced chai in one hand and a Diet Coke in the other. Early fall in DC always makes me feel incredibly nostalgic because this time of the year always seems to be the start of a new chapter in my life. In Fall 2008, I came down to DC to start college at American University and earn my degree in the School of Communication (SOC). Flash forward 4 years and I was a one-woman PR campaign trying to get a job in my chosen field. After several months of networking, job interviews and hand-written thank you notes, I landed a job that set me on my current path. So Fall 2016, let’s see what you have in store!

Thanks for putting up with my little trip down Memory Lane, I’ve been in nostalgia overdrive the last few weeks. But do you see the pattern here with fall being a time for career/life chapters? Spoiler alert: It’s going to manifest itself in more work wear/work advice content in the coming weeks. If you have any career-related questions you want answered here on the blog, email me Lauren(at)dcgirlinpearls(dot)com, tweet me @DCGirlinPearls or snap me @ Lauren_Anne2989!

And now finally to the actual reason for this post: 5 Must-Have Work Wear Pieces for Fall.

Fitted Blazer: I used to never wear blazers because I was convinced they made my shoulders look broad. But I got over my hang-up and now blazers are my go-to for work days when I need to look extra-professional. I’ve got my share of the traditional blazers (J.Crew’s schoolboy blazer is a favorite) but I’m really digging this fitted jacquard blazer from L.L. Bean, I love the open style’s details! It’d also look great with a white tshirt and dark jeans for the weekend.

Sleeveless Sheath: Sheath dresses are like pencil skirts, they do look good on literally everyone. I have sheath dresses in black, navy and gray and they are in constant rotation Monday through Friday. Black is obviously a classic color for work but I’m really digging the maroon sheath for the fall season, especially when paired with the spotted heels.

Satchel: I’m trying to break my habit of carrying a large tote to and from work, or at least trying not to carry it every day. A satchel is my tool for editing down my tote and carrying only the essentials for 9-5.

Stacked Heels: On the days I know I’m going to be running around or have to be on my feet, I reach for my stacked heels. The extra thick heel gives the extra support I need to power through. The spotted stacked heels from Sole Society are just too fun not to share! Take a walk on the wild side ; )

Statement Scarf: When I say statement scarf, I’m not talking about the oversized or blanket scarves we’ll all be bundled up in a few months. I’m talking about the fun printed scarves that you can wrap over a dress, drape loosely under your blazer’s collar or even just tie onto the handle of your bag. I rely on statement necklaces to add some pizazz to a conservative work wardrobe. The beauty of statement scarves is packing more color into your accessory! And you know I’m all about bringing bright colors into your 9-5 wardrobe.

J.Crew has some great stacked heels out for fall, too! I need to get to a store to try them on, though. I rarely have success buying shoes online!

I’ll have to check out J.Crew, thanks for the tip! I’m a pretty true size 8 in shoes but I hear you, I always have to try them on in stores. You just never know how they’ll fit/feel until you take them for a test run (so to speak)!

Oh my goodness, I think we were in school at the same time! I’m also an AU SOC grad (class of 2012)!
I love all the pieces you’ve chosen – I especially think that a well-fitting blazer is a versatile piece (can be dressed up or down)!
