EVA Waterproof Birkenstocks Review

This is not a post I thought I would ever write. Birkenstocks have never been on my list of shoes to buy. I felt that their width and bulk would make my feet look like jetskis and the “They’re unflattering to me” rationale kept them solidly off my radar.

Last summer, James purchased a pair of Birks and he started living in them practically overnight. James raved about how comfortable they were, especially for standing. He even so went so far as to formally declare them to be his grilling Birks. I, on the other hand, still was not prepared to add a pair to my own wardrobe.

A year later, I decided to get back into lap swimming. I grew up on swim teams and worked as a lifeguard and swimming instructor for my town’s recreation department during high school and part of college. I hadn’t swam laps in ages and really missed it. It felt like now was a good time to be back in the water. I picked up a swimsuit, goggles, and a swim cap but knew I wanted a more substantial sandal for the pool deck than a flimsy pair of flip-flops.

A vision of the trendy plastic Birks popped into my head and into my shopping cart. At $50, it was a low risk and an item I could always return.

Sizing Info

For my Birks, I went with the dusty blue colorway because I thought it would look cute as a pool deck shoe as well as paired with shorts and a tee for a walk around the block with Riley.

In shoes, I am without fail always a size 8. I consulted with the sizing chart and ordered a size 39. They fit perfectly and after adjusting the buckles, we were in business.

My EVA waterproof Birkenstocks have an ethylene-vinyl acetate sole, which basically means that it feels like foam and is very lightweight. These $50 Birks come in their classic two-buckle design with strap, have an anatomically shaped footbed, and traction on the sole.

They come in a variety of colors, including pink, a really pretty lavender, and this blush hue. Another big plus for me was that you can wipe them clean with soap and water.

I will say they took a teensy bit of adjusting to in terms of walking. No irritation or anything like that – I just wasn’t used to feeling that extra layer of bulk on the sole.
