A Trip to Eastern Market

This weekend was absolutely beautiful D.C. weather. My roommates & I took a gorgeous drive to Eastern Market to pick up local produce. I’ve been to Eastern Market twice before and after my visit I left wondering, “Why don’t I come here more often?!”

Since it was such a nice day, we strolled around all the stands inspecting the produce and then went inside. Inside were a full scale meat & fish market with absolutely beautiful scallops, which consumed my entire willpower not to buy. Instead, I purchased 2 limes for $1, 4 peaches for $4 and 5 HUMONGOUS tomatoes & a large yellow pepper for $4.50.

Let me just say, the peaches were the sweetest, most melt in your mouth peaches I’ve ever tasted. My roommate & I talked to the farmer & his wife while we loaded up on peaches, he’s a 5th generation farmer. Talk about Americana. He & his wife were both super sweet (like their peaches!) and when I asked him if the peaches were yellow or white, he responded with “Yellow. Try one for yourself!” He then handed me a baby peach that was probably the best peach I’ve ever eaten.

The tomatoes were delicious and for lunch tomorrow I’m packing sliced tomatoes seasoned with a little salt & pepper, yummm.

Oh, and did I mention the dessert stand? These cupcakes looked like works of art and they had cannolis, pastries and everything this sweet-aholic would happily eat. Next time, I’m going to get a cannoli. At the time, it was super hot out so I opted to get Pitango gelato instead of a cupcake.

I also found a beautiful small painting of the Washington monument lit up at night for $30 that I’ll buy for my mother’s birthday in August.
