If you work in a conservative environment (talking about dress code, not politics), you have just a teeny amount of wiggle room to create an outfit that’s youthful yet polished. It’s a tightrope walk sometimes to balance professional and 20-something. No 20-something wants to feel frumpy! I frequently am asked what I wear to work and it hit me: I should start a new series on DC Girl. Each week, I will do a post featuring an outfit I have worn to work or plan to.
For the inaugural post, I chose my second favorite pencil skirt in my closet. The soft pink lace is the right dose of feminine and I keep it simple on top with my favorite chunky pearl necklace. Oh and remember my linen shirt from last week’s post? It came out to play again, this time in my 9-5 life! To add some pizzazz to the outfit, the finishing touch are my gold J.Crew Etta pumps. They are incredibly comfortable and the chunky heel makes the daily hustle easier on your feet.

Definite YES on making this series a thing. Finding the right balance of professional and fun is so difficult! (Especially if you’re in the DC area, where humidity is so awful in the summer!)

Humidity is every girl’s enemy in the summer! I also feel bad for guys who have to wear heavy suits, shudderrrr. I took the Metro yesterday for the first time in awhile and holy cannoli, I was glistening (read: sweating).
YAY! I love seeing what girls like me in the DMV wear to work. My office is casual for summer and business casual the rest of the year so it is nice to get some fresh ideas. I love the idea of a linen oxford with a pencil skirt 🙂

Love the idea of this series! I work in quite a casual office but I am not always sure about the line between professional, frumpy and overly formal!
Violet, it’s definitely a tough line to figure out. It’s taken me about 6 years to figure it out but I’m still learning!
