{Pearls & Prose: The Best Advice I Ever Got}

After completing my 2012 Reading Challenge, I was not quite certain which book to pick to round out my book list. I had to keep my momentum going but wanted a special book to reflect on 2012 and ring in 2013.

I selected Katie Couric’s The Best Advice I Ever Got.

2012 was quite a year for me: I graduated from college with a degree in Public Relations and began my job search. I steadily built an impressive resume throughout college and thought my job hunt would be a breeze. It’s December and I am still searching.

It has been an emotional roller coaster and I’ll be honest, I struggled to remain sunny side up.

I know it’s corny but I really love the “fresh start” aspect of New Year’s Eve. You reflect on the year and then start anew. 2012 has wonderful memories but I am ready for 2013.

But what does this all have to do with Katie Couric? Plenty! Her book is comprised of the best advice and insights given to people who later became giants in their respective fields. Journalists, actors, world leaders, stylists…they are all in her book.

For me, it was both humbling and enlightening to read this book. The Best Advice I Ever Got showed me how Katie Couric, acclaimed journalist, struggled to break into the industry and even flopped her first on-air reporting gig!

If you read my blog regularly, you know I visit my local public library instead of buying books at Barnes & Noble (life on a budget). But The Best Advice I Ever Got might just make its way onto my desk permanently as a reminder to not lose heart.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, whether they are looking to land their first big girl job or even if they need friendly words of encouragement and inspiration every now and then.

Have you had a book thoroughly inspire you? Which book? I am looking for new books for Reading Challenge 2013!

    Ah! I love this book! I read it right before senior year, and it was clearly a worthwhile read. I know you are going to find the perfect job in 2013!
