On my lunch breaks and weekends, I’ve been perusing for sangria recipes to sample on the weekends. After discovering this recipe, I might have to pick up a bottle of brandy and invite a couple friends over to taste test this concoction. Basil is one of my favorite herbs and in summer I keep it on hand at all times. There is nothing better than the smell of sweet basil in the summer time (try it in your lemonade sometime!).

Ingredients
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
8 basil sprigs
lemon zest
orange zest
2 bottles, pinot grigio (chilled)
3/4 cup brandy
1/2 cup orange juice
ice
club soda
Directions
In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
Add the basil sprigs and lemon and orange zests. Let the syrup stand, stirring often, until cooled to room temperature, about 20 minutes. Discard the basil sprigs and zest strips.
In a large pitcher, combine the basil syrup with the wine, brandy and orange juice. Pour the sangria into ice-filled glasses, top with club soda and garnish each drink with an orange slice.
