My first summer in DC, I spent an embarrassing amount of money on Starbucks.
I interned full time and worked part time at the J.Crew in Friendship Heights. This was when my height of cocktail sophistication involved pink lemonade + citrus vodka. My rent was ridiculously cheap by DC standards and I had my own room. The catch? I had a 20 minute uphill walk to get to the Metro. Which I did every single morning in a pencil skirt. When it was approximately 90 degrees.
By the time I clawed my way up on that hill on my hands + knees, Starbucks was shining brightly right next to the Tenley station like a beacon of frozen drinks. Iced venti skim chai, please + thank you! Ugh, and they saw me coming a mile away with those gift receipts.
Linen + cotton became my BFFs. Light, loose work apparel and venti iced chais were godsends for surviving a DC summer. And a lot of Popsicles for nights when it was too hot to cook every night…
