Since it seems like fall weather has finally arrived in DC, I spent yesterday finishing up switching out my closets. I also went through my clothes and played the “Keep, Toss, Donate” game, which ultimately created a huge pile of things to donate to Goodwill in my living room. I’ve been playing this game for a couple of weeks now, it’s crazy what you can accumulate without realizing it over the years and lately I’ve felt like my apartment could use a good cleaning-out. It’s oddly therapeutic. I just hit play on a podcast and go to town.
My cleaning-out frenzy has shown me I have a bit of plaid problem. It’s really not a problem per se but just that I own an alarming amount of it. As the temperatures drop, my plaid outfits rise. Probably because most of my plaid pieces are flannel or wool and are incredibly warm and cozy. Not to mention, they are incredibly easy to throw on on the weekend and still look put-together even though you overslept and had about 10 minutes before you had to run out the door to meet friends. Speaking from experience.
I’ve rounded up my favorite plaid pieces under $50 – cozy and budget-friendly? What’s not to love?!
Old Navy Classic Flannel Shirt: $22-29
Old Navy has been crushing it lately. Their classic flannel shirt comes in a variety of plaids and is more than reasonable at $22-29 depending on the pattern. At that price, it’s easy to justify stocking up!
J.Crew Factory Blanket Scarf: $41
What did we do to deserve blanket scarves? I keep one always at my desk because my office tends to get chilly. I loved the colors in this blanket scarf as soon as I saw it and it may be in an upcoming outfit post soon! Spoiler: It will.
J.Crew Factory Wool Sidewalk Skirt: $35
I gushed over the wool sidewalk skirt in this post so I won’t bore you with the details again. Needless to say, I love this skirt for Casual Friday at work or on the weekend when you need to look more put-together than jeans and a sweater.
L.L. Bean Signature Scarf: $49
Okay I had to add another blanket scarf to this list but I loved this plaid pattern on a gray background – it doesn’t get much more classic than this! Plus, L.L. Bean Signature pieces are always fantastic in quality so at $49, this scarf will quickly become a wardrobe staple for years to come.
L.L. Bean Scotch Plaid Shirt:
The Scotch plaid shirt first made an appearance on the blog last year at Thanksgiving and I think I wear it almost every weekend in the fall and winter. The slightly fitted plaid shirt is perfect because unlike other flannel shirts, it doesn’t look boxy on you. I wear this shirt with jeans and leggings or tucked into my go-to wool sidewalk skirt for a dressier look. It would also look cute layered underneath a sleeveless sheath dress for an office holiday party. But I’m getting ahead of myself on that one.
Old Navy Puffer Vest: $20
Yup, you read that right. This plaid puffer vest is only $20 and is super cute for Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving over a swing dress (because #secondhelpings). I’m scooping this up while I can!

I love all things plaid too-it’s just so festive for this time of year! The black watch plaid is my favorite, so dark and moody!
