You know the expression “Good things come to those who wait?” Personally, I’ve never been one for patience but in this situation, My Berlin Kitchen was well worth the wait. I heard the title floated around as a “must read” and when I looked it up on the {DC Library} site, I was astounded by the wait list! I’m not sure of the exact time frame but I have definitely been on the wait list for at least a month before a copy came into my possession.
Author Luisa Weiss tells the story of her childhood growing up in West Berlin, moving to the United States, back to Europe, and continuously jumping across the pond. As she strives to bridge the gap between the cultures and find the right path to love, she finds consistency and happiness in the kitchen and reliving memories through recipes.
Each chapter of this memoir has a theme revolving around a particular dish. At the end of each chapter, Weiss gives the recipe for the dish. It truly is a love story (with recipes) as its subtitle suggests.
I love to cook but even if you don’t leap for joy at the prospect of whipping up a dish, you will find yourself entranced in the storytelling of Luisa. You find yourself sad for her in the low points and then cheering her on as she chooses the path meant to be.
The best part? You can find more of Luisa’s stories and recipes on her blog, {The Wednesday Chef}! I particularly enjoyed that she was a blogger before becoming an author. I’d love to turn DC Girl in Pearls into a book someday! But that’s another post for another day…
