helpful apps in the kitchen

Since I moved into my new apartment, I have not done any heavy cooking. I’m still in the midst of putting away the final odds ‘n ends and setting up the flow of my apartment. But I’m also a bit intimidated to really prepare a meal. Why, you ask? Well, for my birthday this year, my parents gave me a set of stainless steel cookware. The skillets and pans are absolutely beautiful and I love the idea of feeling like my favorite Food Network personalities preparing dishes with this set. But they are also really really intimidating. I’ve been doing research but if you have any advice or tips on cooking with stainless steel, please share it in the comments below!

In the meantime, I’ll share my favorite apps to inspire my next dish:helpful iPhone apps for cooking

Everyday Food: I know I’m biased but my girl Martha nails it with this app. Packed with instructional videos and a database of recipes organized by healthy eating, seasonal produce and taste, this app will become a part of your routine.

Food Network: If you love to watch Food Network (super guilty), use this app to find recipes and watch videos by your favorite FN personality.

Wegman’s: If you shop at Wegman’s regularly, this app is a MUST. Create different grocery lists and organize your shopping trip efficiently with its aisle organizer. Total time saver.

No Time To Cook: Plug in your basic ingredients you have on hand and how much time you have to prepare a dish. Real Simple does it again with their app to pinpoint the easiest dish you can make with things you already have!

Epicurious: The gold standard of foodie communities, Epicurious’ newly launched app allows you to share recipes but the coolest feature hands down is the voice activated controls (pun intended)!

Trader Joe’s: My newest addition, this app features a handful of fun products. I like to check in on this app and challenge myself to use an item I haven’t used before.

I changed from non-stick to stainless steel several years ago and love it, mostly because things caramelize better. That said, the big lesson I learned early on was to turn the heat down. If your recipe or your head says medium-high, use medium. You can always turn it up, but it takes a while to cool down and might burn stuff in the meantime especially if you have an electric range, which most of us around here do.

Love Wegmans but had no idea they had an app! I will have to check that out. I have a mix of stainless steel pans and non-stick. The biggest thing to me about stainless is to be careful with the temperature, just like Alison said. If it gets too high, the pans themselves can actually develop little burn spots…if nothing else, it makes your pretty pans look ugly!
