I originally had another post scheduled for tomorrow but yesterday morning, I decided to change it. I’ve heard that our sense of smell plays an important role in our ability to make memories but I never really paid attention to that gem of information until yesterday. I was walking to work and passed a garden store I’ve walked by probably 100 times.
This time, I caught the combination scent of fresh flowers, MiracleGro and an aroma I can’t quite put my finger on. All of my summer childhood memories came rushing back to me and I had to work at not tearing up. My mother loves to garden and was blessed with a green thumb while on the other hand, I was never quite fond of gardening. However, every spring and throughout the summer, my mother would coerce me into helping her plant flowers and tend to her gardens. I usually was given the task of pouring in the water while she placed the seed into the earth. I also remember riding shotgun with my mother to go to so many garden stores in search of the perfect accent flowers. What was probably 3 garden stores in a row felt like an eternity to my 7 year old self.
My mother & I have an amazing relationship and I’m not kidding when I say we talk on the hour every day for about an hour. I’m really excited to see her in a little less than 2 weeks for my graduation weekend! Yesterday morning’s inadvertent trip down memory lane really just cemented that while I may be on the verge of graduating from college and starting a new chapter in my life, I am still very much a little girl who needs her mother. Maybe when she’s here, we can go to the garden store and pick out flowers for my apartment balcony. However, I will draw the line at going to no more than 3 garden stores to find that perfect accent flower!
My favorite flowers are:
I love having a vase of hyacinth flowers on my bedside table because not only are they beautiful, they smell out of this world and a deep breath of their scent always relaxes me.
In my backyard at home, my mother has stunning rhodendron bushes that when in bloom, look too beautiful to be real. They always take my breath away and truly meant spring (and later summer) had arrived!
