We’re on the cusp of *peak bloom* season – the biggest season in DC besides election season. The Tidal Basin is iconic for its pink blooms but that can mean crowds. Here are 6 spots (that aren’t the Tidal Basin) to see cherry blossoms.
Could I call myself a DC girl if I didn’t post at least once about the cherry blossoms? James and I took Riley on a long walk around the neighborhood on Friday because it was just too gorgeous of a day to stay inside. The cherry blossoms were almost ready to really pop and it made me so excited for cherry blossom season – the biggest season in DC besides election season!
James and I are taking photos this weekend for our wedding invitations (long distance relationship = very few photos together) and since it’ll be peak bloom, we’re practically obligated to snap photos with the pink blooms.
Sidenote: Go check out our wedding photographer, Ana, and give her a follow!
The Tidal Basin is iconic for good reason but that can also mean large crowds of people. Whether you want to avoid the crowds for the perfect snap or just to admire the blossoms in peace, here are 6 spots (that aren’t the Tidal Basin) to see cherry blossoms:
National Arboretum: The National Arboretum can be a hike if you don’t live in Northeast but it is SO worth it. I went during cherry blossom season a couple of years ago and it was just so fun to walk around, stretch your legs, and see the blossoms. Bonus: You can also see the National Capitol Columns, which were part of the U.S. Capitol from 1828 to 1958.
Library of Congress: The Library of Congress is a wonderful spot to see the blooms without the crowds. It also has other gardens and greens to bring a picnic. And it’s a quick walk from the Library to the next two spots on the list.
Supreme Court: I snapped the picture above outside of the Supreme Court! If you go to the green area next to the Supreme Court by East Capitol St., you’ll find cherry blossoms for amazing pics. Bonus: You get the Capitol dome in the background!
Stanton Park: Stanton Park has a soft spot in my heart because of all the happy memories I have of picnics in the park with friends and reading books on sunny days. Plus, Stanton Park has classic DC charm for days with wrought iron fences, views of rowhouses, and a direct line to the Capitol.
Dumbarton Oaks: Dumbarton Oaks has been on my “to go” list for ages but visiting there was delayed because of the pandemic lockdowns. I’ve heard it’s gorgeous and based on the Insta photos there, it’s definitely a must-visit. Fingers crossed I make it this blossom season!
Kenilworth Park + Aquatic Gardens: Kenilworth is also a spot I’ve wanted to go for ages but like National Arboretum, it can be a bit of a trek. If I don’t make it there for cherry blossoms, I am absolutely determined to go to Kenilworth in August for their Lotus and Water Lily Festival!
