About two months ago, I popped into my happy place (Trader Joe’s) to get a few items for the week ahead. While I was picking up another facial cleanser (Trader Joe’s Spa Face Wash with Tea Tree Oil has been my go-to for over a decade at this point), a new-to-me item caught my eye.
Trader Joe’s Marula Oil wasn’t a skincare item I’d been looking for and done any prior research on but I figured it was worth a try. I had purchased a travel size of Biossance’s rose oil during their Friends + Family sale and was happy with how my complexion reacted to adding facial oil as my nightly skincare routine’s closer. Plus, Trader Joe’s skincare section is sneakily great!
First things first – how much is Trader Joe’s Marula Oil?
Trader Joe’s Marula Oil will cost you a very reasonable $6.99 for 25mL! To give you a comparison, Drunk Elephant at Sephora sells their marula oil for $40 for 15mL. So like most Trader Joe’s items, you’re getting a terrific price.
What is marula oil?
Made from the seeds of marula trees in Africa, marula oil is a lightweight oil that is rich with anti-oxidants and said to boost your skin’s hydration and even help with anti-aging.
What are the benefits of adding marula oil to my skincare routine?
Since I’ve added marula oil to my routine, I’ve noticed a visible difference in my skin. My complexion looks more hydrated and (dare I say) dewy, which has helped reduce the appearance of fine lines on my forehead. I also think my skin looks smoother and my slight rosacea on my cheeks isn’t as noticeable. This oil has won a forever slot in my regimen and will definitely be a repeat purchase.
Does it smell?
To me, Trader Joe’s Marula Oil has no smell. Some people report a slightly nutty smell but I haven’t been able to discern any aroma at all.
What step should oil be in my skincare routine?
I apply marula oil every night as the final step in my skincare routine. I cleanse, apply toner (to prep my skin and allow better absorption of serums), apply serum, moisturizer if I’m feeling especially dry, and then ending with marula oil. Thankfully, it’s very quick to absorb and surprisingly non-greasy for an oil. So I don’t worry about it getting on my bedding. It’s also colorless.
How long does a bottle of marula oil last?
A little bit goes a long way. I typically fill the dropper a little less than halfway and and pat it all over my face. I’ve been using it religiously for about two months and am just now needing to get another bottle. Not bad for $6.99!
How else can I use marula oil?
Personally, the skin on the back of my hands get really dry during the colder months. After I pat the marula oil onto my face, I wipe the excess over my hands. It’s made a difference in my cuticles, decreased the amount of hangnails, and helped keep my hands moisturized against the chill in the air.
I’ve also applied a few drops onto the ends of my hair after washing it to help with split ends and dryness. Trader Joe’s rose facial oil (it usually comes out around Valentine’s Day) is also great for applying to the ends of your hair. I’m a big fan of Trader Joe’s Lemongrass Coconut Body Oil during the wintertime but I think adding a few drops of marula oil to your elbows, knees, or other dry skin-prone areas would be beneficial.
