A Scary Good Time

Cherry Lime Gin Rickey | dcgirlinpearls.com

I love Halloween. Ever since I was a little kid, Halloween was a favorite holiday. The costumes, the spooky ghost stories, THE CANDY. Going trick-or-treating with your friends and then having a sleepover going through (and trading) your loot and watching “scary” movies from the comforts our sleeping bags. Yup, totally had a Barbie sleeping bag. Princess Barbie, to be exact. Probably my best Halloween costume was a “Dead 50s Girl.” My mom and I took my 50s poodle skirt costume from another Halloween and stretched that fake cobwebby stuff all over my costume, tucking fake spiders into the web. Then we went to the backyard and my mom threw leaves all over me until I looked like I’d just crawled out of the cemetery. I think she enjoyed the leaf-throwing a bit too much…

Do you have a favorite Halloween costume and memory?

So can you really blame me for getting a bad case of Halloween-envy each year? Those kids don’t know how good they have it. But we can’t let kids have all the fun so here’s an idea for a Halloween-themed girls’ night in. Just trade the boos for booze (I had to!).

Start with candy. And lots of it. Have your guests fill out a treat bag and then let’s get to the good stuff. IZZE’s Sparkling Pomegranate and Cherry Lime are the perfect colors to start off a spooky libation. Add a little gin and you can whip up Gin Rickeys (a DC original) for you and your friends. Initially, I planned to stretch a piece of cotton candy over the cocktails (an homage to my spiderweb-laden costume) and I searched high ‘n low in DC for cotton candy and could not find it anywhere. So if you make these cocktails or use cotton candy to create a spiderweb-inspired cocktail, please let me know. Someone has to do it!! Anyway, I created these cute little ghost stirrers using a popsicle stick and a Peeps Ghost. I’m not a big fan of Peeps so I was more than willing to sacrifice these marshmallow specters in the name of fun drink accessories.

Quick side note: Does anyone else now associate cheesy-looking ghost images with Snapchat? Maybe I’ll just stick the rest of these Peeps to a black shirt and go as Snapchat for Halloween. There’s an idea…

It wouldn’t be a Halloween party without some good scary movies on in the background, right? I really do not like gory movies at all but I do like scary movies. Anything with paranormal activity and I’m there. Just no bloodshed, please. Unless your guests are slasher-movie enthusiasts, I think it’s a safe bet to dial it back to a simpler time when movies didn’t have all the *ahem* realistic depictions of missing limbs and demonic possessions. Classic horror movies are classic for a reason and thanks to the technology of yesteryear, you’ll be able to sleep without every single light on.

Candy, check. Libations, check. Fun horror movies, check!

I had no idea that Rickeys were a DC thing! “It” is also a great Halloween classic. I think because I’m totally freaked out by carnivals + circuses and all things associated. Poltergeist too. All those 80s oldies but goodies!
