Last year, I visited New Orleans with my friends and fell head over heels in love with the city. Seriously, I would go back again in a heartbeat. I loved the city’s atmosphere and ambiance, the architecture of the French plantation style and the dining. I love seafood and I love spicy. Needless to say, I was in my glory on my vacation to the Crescent City.
I haven’t explored Cajun cooking in D.C. much so please speak up if you know of a great, authentic New Orleans restaurant in the District! However, a friend of mine did suggest I check out the Cajunators food truck. I was really excited to try out a new food truck, especially since I knew I could expect NOLA dishes.
It wasn’t difficult to spot the Cajunators food truck: it’s painted a psychedelic array of colors and had a rather long line of customers. It’s always a promising sign when people are lining up! I got in line and quickly ordered a shrimp po’ boy ($10) with a side of fries ($2). I hadn’t eaten breakfast that morning & was starving so it was a “go big or go home” moment for me.
I waited for my meal for 25 minutes but luckily, the other people waiting for their po’ boys were very friendly and I had a good time chatting with them. Let me tell you, these customers were very loyal to Cajunators, another promising sign for a food truck. After all, they were willing to wait 25 minutes on a blustery day for their lunch!
My lunch came piping hot & smelled unbelievably delicious.
The fries had Cajun seasoning on them, which I appreciated, however they are not as good as Five Guys’ Cajun Fries. To be fair, few Cajun fries can hold a candle to Five Guys. On the other hand, the shrimp po’ boy was delicious and hit the spot! I asked for extra hot but it wasn’t quite as spicy as I would have liked. Still, it tasted delicious and the shrimp was very fresh. You could easily eat 1/2 of the po’ boy for lunch and save the rest for dinner. However, like I said, I hadn’t eaten breakfast so I ate the entire po’ boy (but not all the fries!).
Have you had Cajunators? What did you order? Also, D.C. people: please suggest any good New Orleans restaurants in the District!!
Love cajun food and New Orleans! Think I am going to have to stop by the food truck…looks delicious!
You must try the Gorditas truck on Julian and 26th Street. They are open from 6 pm to 11 pm. Wed. tghourh Sun. nights. The sign may say carnitas , but everything is vegetarian. I’ve only had the gorditas, but I’m hooked.
I am from Louisiana and am therefore very picky about where to eat “food from home.” Best Louisiana food in DC is Acadiana on NY Ave by the convention cneter. AH-MAZE-ING!!
